Don’t be scared. Tyler Hoechlin, who plays Derek in Teen Wolf, actually looks nice without the fangs — just go and read our story. In the meantime, here’s the rest of what he had to say about the TV show, Twilight, and all things supernatural.

YOU WERE ALMOST CASTED IN TWILIGHT AS EDWARD CULLEN’S BROTHER. WHO DO YOU THINK WOULD WIN IN A FIGHT BETWEEN DEREK AND HIM?

Tyler Posey (who plays Scott McCall in Teen Wolf) said that our werewolves will win because we have opposable thumbs. So I’m gonna go ahead and go with Tyler on that one and say that that would be our advantage but it’d be a close fight.

WHY DO YOU THINK THERE’S SO MUCH FASCINATION ABOUT SUPERNATURAL SHOWS?

I think there’s such an element of romance, not in our show but in a lot of supernatural shows. Usually, at the core are these love stories. And I think when you put it into this kind of world where the stakes are higher and life and death is kinda always around you, I think it makes it that much more passionate so I think that’s why a lot of people are drawn towards about it.

I don’t think it’s something that would go away. For me, personally, I know when we started the show, it was kinda at the time where Twilight was at its peak, it was this obsession and I think there were a lot of people were trying to capitalise on that by quickly putting out any kind of product that just had to do with this genre — vampires or werewolves — and I think that’s what kinda give it like a bad name. It’s that a lot of people were just trying to put something out there because they thought it was a quick way to make some money on a movie because of a popular topic or a popular genre.

WAS IT LIKE THAT FOR TEEN WOLF TOO?

Well, personally, I feel like I read the Teen Wolf script and that wasn’t what this was to me. It was a great story, it was very well-written and the characters are very specific and that’s what allowed the show to be successful for this long, it’s that, it’s not about the fact that we have werewolves on our show — it could be like a completely different creature, in a totally different setting—and I think it’s the characters and the storylines and the relationships that really keep the show going. I think people just enjoy watching a good show and a good film. And if you can make a good show and a good film where characters are what people can relate to, that they can attached themselves to, then I think they’d be drawn towards regardless of the genre or the popularity of the genre.

HOW DO YOU FEEL TO BE BACK ON TEEN WOLF FOR THE THIRD TIME?

It feels good, it’s exciting. I definitely feel a little bit different this year coming in to 24 episodes instead of 12. We’ve finished shooting the first 12 episodes and usually that would mean that we’re done (but) this year it just means we’re halfway there so it’s definitely a bit of a different feeling but we’re very excited for it.

Season 3, the character’s development is different as well. This year, you know, Derek, he’s been humbled a little bit because of what happened. A lot of last season was Derek coming into his own and feeling like he was this confident new Alpha wolf and this year, it’s kind of him fixing the mess that he’s created. So it’s not matter of him coming in and feeling like the big guy on campus, he kind of feels like he’s made a mess of things.

THERE WERE A COUPLE OF ACTION SCENES AT THE END OF SEASON 2, WILL WE SEE MORE OF THOSE?

Yeah, definitely. Season 3 is definitely — of all the seasons so far — the most action-filled that we’ve had. I feel like it’s something that was unintentional? Talking to the writers, it wasn’t their intention for it to be that way but it just kind of ended up happening that way with the storylines and the characters that we’re introducing this year. It just kind of led to a lot of conflicts, and most that are unresolved, and there are physical conflicts. So, Season 3 most definitely has a lot more action that we’ve seen from the past few seasons.

WILL THERE BE MORE CONFLICTS AND SURPRISES?

Yeah, definitely. We introduced a lot of new characters this season — the Alpha packs being some of those — so it’s definitely going to be a lot more surprises just because of the amount of characters that we have. You know, learning who they are, their true motives and why there’re there. So there’s a lot of twists and turns this season and finding out who’s on whose side. How good the good guys are and how bad the bad guys are, that kind of thing.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE TOUGHEST SCENES TO SHOOT?

We’re always playing with the idea of the supernatural so there are scenes that border the lines of reality and not reality. So basically we’re acknowledging that there are supernatural creatures but once you get pass that idea, I think the scenes where you have to find that line of knowing something that is so outrageous and unbelievable and playing in on the show — to bring an honesty and genuine human element to those things is the toughest thing.

(But) I (also) feel like we make fun of ourselves and we can laugh at ourselves. (When) we don’t try to be too serious about it and take ourselves too seriously, it allows people to kind of, you know, attach themselves to these characters.

WHAT ABOUT PHYSICALLY TOUGH SCENES?

For me personally, I’m not a big fan of scenes with a lot of water. And I say that because we do have very specific scenes — but I can’t give too much away about it — with water. When you see them together on TV, it lasts for maybe a minute or two, but in shooting that, we’re shooting in water for real and for three days. And being in water for two whole days and doing your scenes and all the action…

WHERE IS THE STORY GOING WITH THE ALPHA PACK?

We can’t obviously give too much away about (but) the one hint I could probably say is what our producers said — we tend to label people as good guys, bad guys and a lot of other things. There’s gonna be a lot of questions (in the Alpha Packs), what their true motives are and who’s on whose side, that kinda thing.
