Tyler Hoechlin, who also played Tom Hanks’ son in ‘Road to Perdition,’ wants to make it to the big leagues.

Some athletes want to be actors, and some actors want to be athletes.

Tyler Hoechlin is both.

Hoechlin has been in a blockbuster movie with Tom Hanks, appeared on a hit television show and walked the red carpet in Hollywood. But he’d trade all of that – well, maybe some of it – to fulfill his dream of becoming a professional baseball player.

Hoechlin – pronounced HECK-lin – is taking those steps to make it to the Big Leagues at UC Irvine, where he’s taken on a new role as the team’s second baseman.

“Baseball’s always been my dream,” said the 20-year-old. “I’ve actually recently had a few offers for some movies that I’ve had to turn down because they shoot during the season. That’s something I definitely want to pursue, but right now, I’m focusing on baseball.”

Hoechlin, who transferred to UC Irvine from Arizona State before this season, plays second base for the 17-2 Anteaters. He’s currently batting .214 with three RBI and one home run.

The sociology major says most actors would love to have that batting average when it comes to auditions. “If you can get two roles out of 10 auditions, you’re doing pretty well,” he said.

Hoechlin beat out more then 2,000 actors for the role of Michael Sullivan Jr. in the 2002 hit film “Road to Perdition.” He played Hanks’ older son and received glowing reviews and awards for his performance, a huge accomplishment considering the movie also starred Paul Newman and Jude Law.

Q. How did you get into acting?
A.
My mom told me when I was eight that she put me in some commercials as a baby. I’ve never seen (the commercials), and I’m not sure if I want to. But I remember telling her I’d like to act so I could make some money to buy video games. I think she thought I would eventually get over it, but it hasn’t happened. I remember one weekend accepting an invitation to audition for an acting school. They liked me, and six months later I signed with an agent and have been making a lot of drives from Corona to L.A.

Q. Do you remember your first audition?
A.
It was for a Blimpy’s Sub commercial. I didn’t get it. In fact, my first four auditions went nowhere. The fifth one landed me a role in a Disney movie called “Happy Haunts.” Looking back on it, that was a pretty lame movie.

Q. What was your first non-lame role?
A.
The movie Family Tree, which starred Cliff Robertson, Naomi Judd and Robert Forster. I was 10.

Q. What is it about baseball that you enjoy?
A.
It’s hard to explain. I just love the game. I love being out there on the field, diving for balls and getting dirty. I love playing with the team, competing and winning.

Q. Would you like to act in a baseball movie?
A.
Absolutely. There have been a couple of occasions that I’ve come close, but because of scheduling it just didn’t happen. But, yeah, that would be something I’d love to do.

Q. What would you rather have: an Academy Award or a Major League MVP award?
A.
A Major League MVP award. Paul Newman is still getting nominations in his 80s, so I think I’ll have time to do that stuff.
